History

Belle Meade began in the early nineteenth century as a small log cabin settlement before evolving into a renowned thoroughbred horse farm. By the mid 1800s the estate had grown in size wealth and influence becoming nationally known for breeding championship racehorses.

The Greek Revival mansion was completed in 1853 and reflected both prosperity and ambition. Enslaved African Americans built and maintained the estate and played a central role in its operations a history now openly interpreted as part of the tour.

After the Civil War the farm declined and the property was gradually reduced. In the twentieth century preservation efforts transformed Belle Meade into a historic site. Today it stands as a place of education reflection and remembrance sharing a fuller and more honest story of Southern history.
