The USS Intrepid was commissioned in 1943 and served with distinction during World War II surviving multiple attacks and participating in key Pacific campaigns. After the war it continued service through the Cold War including recovery missions for early space capsules.

Decommissioned in 1974 the ship was saved from scrapping through preservation efforts led by veterans and civic leaders. In 1982 it opened as a museum dedicated to education and public access to history science and technology.

Over the years the museum expanded to include aircraft submarines and the Space Shuttle Enterprise transforming the Intrepid into one of the world’s most comprehensive sea air and space museums while preserving its historic legacy.
