In 1980 the zoo relocated to its current site in southern Miami Dade County and reopened as MetroZoo introducing open range exhibits designed around natural habitats. This marked a major shift toward progressive zoo design in the United States.
In 2010 the zoo was officially renamed Zoo Miami reflecting its global identity and regional pride. Today it stands as a leader in wildlife conservation education and sustainable zoo management serving millions of visitors each year.
