History

Sydney Opera House was conceived in the late 1940s as Australia sought a world class performing arts venue. An international design competition held in 1956 was won by Danish architect Jørn Utzon whose bold sail inspired vision stood apart from all others.

Construction began in 1959 but faced major engineering challenges political controversy and cost overruns. Utzon resigned in 1966 before completion and the building was finished under local architects using revised interior designs.

Officially opened in 1973 by Queen Elizabeth II the Opera House gradually gained global recognition. In 2007 it was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site celebrating its architectural innovation cultural importance and lasting influence on modern design.
