History

Burj Khalifa was conceived as the centerpiece of Downtown Dubai symbolizing the city’s ambition to stand at the crossroads of the world. Construction began in 2004 during a period of rapid growth driven by innovation tourism and global investment.

Designed by architect Adrian Smith of Skidmore Owings and Merrill the tower drew inspiration from Islamic architecture and desert flora. Engineering challenges were immense requiring new approaches to wind resistance concrete pumping and vertical transportation.

Completed and officially opened in 2010 Burj Khalifa redefined what was possible in skyscraper design. At The Top observation decks on Levels 124 and 125 opened the tower to the public allowing millions of visitors to share in a view once imagined only on blueprints.
