History

RHS Garden Bridgewater is located on the historic Worsley New Hall estate, once home to the Earls of Ellesmere. In the nineteenth century, the estate featured grand gardens, lakes, and formal landscapes that reflected the wealth and influence of the Bridgewater family.

Over time, the hall was demolished and the gardens fell into neglect, gradually becoming overgrown and forgotten. For decades, the land remained largely inaccessible, its original design hidden beneath nature’s reclamation.

In the twenty first century, the Royal Horticultural Society undertook one of its most ambitious restoration projects.Transforming the site into a public garden required careful conservation, sensitive design, and a vision that balanced heritage with modern horticulture.

Opened to the public in 2021, RHS Garden Bridgewater stands today as a living landscape where history, community, and contemporary gardening meet, offering a lasting legacy for future generations.
